There are many reasons why a piece of tube needs a bead end. Generally it is done to increase the strength of the edge or to allow a hose or sleeve to be clamped in place. There are also specific types of bead known as compression beads that contain or stop another part from sliding out of the tube. This has a number of commercial applications.

The importance with tube beading is to ensure it meets the relevant tolerances so that it can suit the application. A tighter tolerance will be required if the tubing is to be used in exhaust or high pressure fluid lines. Lower tolerances are generally tolerated with compression beads and applications where leaks are not a concern.

There are two specific ways of adding a bead to the end of a section of tube. The first is known as ram forming and involves the use of an expansion punch. This is inserted into the end of the tubes and expands to widen the diameter. A second punch can be used to reduce it if necessary. The forming is a quick process and allows the creation of multiple beads.

The second method is internal roll forming. It involves using a clamp to hold the tube in place and axial pressure to create the bead. It is a slower process and can only create individual beads but offers the advantage of achieving much higher tolerances.
